AI for accounting firms: which work to hand over first
29 October 2026 · 2 min read · Keyrole team
Accounting firms are told AI will change everything, usually without being told where to start. A practical answer: start with work that repeats, has clear inputs, and produces a result your team can check. Keep judgement, advice and sign-off with your people.
Good first candidates
- Month-end bookkeeping. Posting from bank statements and bills, the same way every month.
- Bank reconciliations. Matching statements to the books and listing what does not match.
- Return preparation. Indirect tax returns from sales and purchase registers, with exceptions listed for review.
- Payroll from timesheets. The same calculation every month, with changes flagged.
- Collecting papers. Requesting, receiving, checking and filing what clients send.
- Year-end packs. Pulling schedules together, where the structure repeats from last year.
Work to keep with your people, for now
- Advice, and anything that depends on the client relationship.
- Judgement areas: provisions, going concern, unusual transactions.
- Final sign-off on anything filed or sent.
AI can prepare the working for these, but a qualified person should make the call.
What to insist on
- Calculations you can rely on. Totals, rates and matches should be computed and re-checked, not estimated by a language model. Every figure should trace to its source row or page.
- Tested on your past work first. Run it on months you have already closed and compare with what your team produced. See how to run that test.
- Review built in. Nothing filed or sent without approval, and a short list of what needs the reviewer's judgement. See how to review AI-prepared work.
- Client data handled properly. Separate workspaces per client, no training on your data, retention you control. See the questions to ask.
One role first
Do not try to automate the whole firm at once. Pick one role, such as a bookkeeper for a group of clients, teach it your method, test it on past months, and let its record decide how far to trust it. That is how Keyrole works: one key role first, then the next.
